Have a Happy and Safe Halloween!

The candy has been bought. It's dark chocolate at my house this year. We're still participating in the #SweetSmart challenge so I decided to go for candy that the tooth fairy recommends.  Plus, I like dark chocolate, too.

I have a golfer and a cheerleader this year.  The golfer has to wear a coat tonight so his golf shirt will be hidden.  I guess he can be the incognito golfer. The cheerleader is just confused on what team she is cheering for this year.  She wears a North Carolina uniform (my alma-mater), but says, "Go, Mr. Wuf!" (That's daddy's NC State Mascot). Maybe she should just say, "Go, Team!"

Happy Halloween!

Enjoy the night with your families!

Calling North Carolina Home Plus Harvest Day Fun in Cary, NC.

It’s interesting, but I think I spent the better part of my 20s wanting to be somewhere else other than North Carolina. You see, I was born in North Carolina. I thought London, New York, or Hollywood would be the place I would want to call home.
In my 30s, I put those big city dreams behind me.  I decided to make Raleigh, North Carolina, my home. As a Chapel Hill graduate, I was very familiar with Blue Heaven, but didn’t know a thing about the capital city.
Those were the foundation-building years for me in my new city.  I married and started a family here in this city, but my personal life was so busy that I didn’t really soak up the true cultural atmosphere that the Triangle area offers its residents.

Wow! Baby Diva will be three in a few weeks.
Sure, I ate in our local restaurants, but that was about it.  The other times we were so consumed with nap schedules and feedings that our day was over by the time we figured out we had a short window actually to do something fun.
But, now in my 40s, it is a different story.  I often click my heels and declare that there is no place like home. I truly consider the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area my home now, and I’m so smitten with the area that I cannot imagine living anywhere else.
Seriously! I’m that much in love with the area.
It’s a great place to raise a family, and there is so much to do here. The choices for family activities are endless.
Baby Diva loves these cut-out things.  I think we will soon have a collection of photos from cut-outs.
The 2012 North Carolina State Fair
If a family sits around every weekend at home as couch potatoes, then it’s by their own choice. It’s certainly not because of a lack of things to do in the area.
Sometimes there is so much to do in the area that you feel guilty if you do want to be a couch potato one weekend.
Well, I take that back. I don’t feel guilty, but you don’t get any peace at home with two kids in the house, so you might as well get out and enjoy yourselves.
In just one weekend, we tackled the North Carolina State Fair and free concerts at downtown Raleigh’s Red Hat Amphitheater for a special family day.  Raleigh’s children’s band, The Sandbox Band, opened the festivities for the free concerts.
Dancing to the Sandbox Band at Red Hat Amphitheatre. They get their moves from me.
Yes, I think you could call us Sandbox Band groupies.  This is the second time we’ve seen the band in the span of a month.  It’s just fun.  The kids dance, burn off energy, and now that they are old enough to act decently in a good restaurant, we eat a very early dinner in downtown Raleigh.  And that makes mommy very happy.
And you may gasp, but this past weekend was also my first time at the N.C. State Fair.
The Picturesque 2012 NC State Fair
I covered county fairs for many years as a TV Journalist and really had no desire to go to the State Fair to fight crowds, ride rides, and eat fattening fried foods after I got out of journalism.
But things change when you are a parent and your 6-year-old finally learns that there is a BIG FAIR in town.
Frankly, my dear, I was impressed. A Raleigh resident makes a Scarlett O'Hara replica dress every year.

We had fun at the Miss NC Scholarship Pageant booth at the NC State Fair.  My only regret was that I didn't
get to wear the crown and hold the septor. So not fair!!
Guess what?  I’ve been missing out all these years. We had a blast, and we’re already talking about next year!
And this weekend, you will probably find us in quaint downtown Cary, North Carolina for the town's Harvest Day.
Here's the Scoop on this Event:
Downtown Harvest Day is this Saturday, Oct. 27 from 2pm-5pm in Ashworth Village by the Heart of Cary Association. It will be a fun fall festival with live music by Tom Teachout, Fall/Halloween carnival games like Witch Pitch, Candy Corn Bean Bag Toss, Ring the Witch's Hat, Duck Pond, Corn Hole, etc. plus face painting, balloon animals, kids' fortune telling, and more. Wristbands are $3 for kids 3 and older, and adults are free. We'll also have additional concessions like Havana Grill, Chick-fil-a with a visit from the cow, Chuckwagon Grill, and a bake sale benefiting MOPS.
The wristbands from Downtown Harvest Day will let the kids continue on at no charge to the Town's events that night:
- Trick-or-treating in Ashworth Village from 5-7PM
- Hayride between Ashworth Village and Cary Elementary between 5:30-7:30PM
- Cary Teen Council's Tricks & Treats Bash at Cary Elementary with additional games, story-telling, and live music from 5-7PM.
*Adults require a $1 wristband for events from 5PM on.*

Hope to see you there.

My Detox Diaries: Yes! That's Kale on My Burger

Pumpkin Smoothie

Well, I survived a 10-day detox/cleanse. And let me just say I DID NOT CHEAT one bit throughout the 10 days.

That’s right! No alcohol. No caffeine. No gluten, and only natural sugar found in foods. I even packed my own food for a huge Oktoberfest party.

Yes, I did!

For those of you just joining us, I participated in a fall renewal detox designed by Lisa Consiglio Ryan of Whole Health Designs. As I shared in my earlier diaries, the program start was bumpy.  The middle days were a little better, and the finale was still no picnic. But, honestly, I could see a change in my body, and my mental clarity, especially in the afternoon.

Some people felt absolutely fantastic on the last few days. I did not.  I was still up and down like a roller coaster with my mood. I felt a little dizzy on the last day since I hadn’t eaten any beans in a day or two. I believe my iron was low.  But there were times during the detox when I was feeling great, too.  I posted the following on Facebook after I cut up a butternut squash for an hour while my two kids destroyed the house around me.

“I think to properly detox, you need to be wealthy, spend an entire week at a spa resort, have a personal chef, and most importantly, no small children around. You know...live like a celebrity.
In hindsight that may be a little harsh, but I will tell you there were parts of this program that I had access to due to the personal coaching that I, unfortunately, didn’t have time to take advantage of on a daily basis.  I was to meditate, breathe, and listen to what my body was telling me.  It’s hard to do that with young children around.

I am feeling really good post detox.  Apparently, all this great cleansing food caused my gray hair to grow.
My salon appointment can't get here quickly enough.

The only voice I heard was a little devil on my shoulder who kept telling me one thing: “You need a nice cup of warm tea to make it all better.”

I was to dry-brush my skin daily, view daily blogs, and check in with a support group.

Instead, I was busy running back to school because my son forgot his backpack one morning and avoiding routes that had a Starbucks. I was busy preparing not only my own food, but food for my family to eat, too.  I was busy listening to my husband tell me that this detox was making me mean and he would be glad when it was over.  I was viewing Lisa’s Day 5 vlog on Day 8. You get the idea.

I did the food plan to a tee, but the mental and physical components of the program were put on a backburner.

So what happened on Day 11 when it was over?

Lisa really encouraged us to not add caffeine or alcohol for another week because she said they were highly addictive substances that our body does not need.

I woke up the morning after the detox, saw that I weighed 126 pounds, and felt so good that I wanted to keep the momentum going.  This old saying is true.

“We only want what we can’t have!”
I had a very small cup of tea, with some almond milk, and no sugar. I didn’t even finish it. It really wasn’t even that good. I learned from this experience that my tea ritual was not so much about the caffeine, but instead I was addicted to the raw sugar that I put in my tea.  I did not give in to my old habits.

On Day 11, I chose to have the tea, but I chose not to have the sugar.  That’s a lifestyle change I plan to keep.  I also plan to continue to start my day with a glass of lemon water and shot of apple cider vinegar.

We also got back in the land of the living and had a break at Starbucks on Day 11. I had a sugar-free skinny latte and the tiniest bite of a pumpkin scone.  I didn’t even want it.

A Starbucks break in Cary, North Carolina
What I loved was that I enjoyed being able to go into a Starbucks again and blend in with the other coffee junkies.  While on the plan, I felt a little depressed and deprived. I kind of wanted to be a recluse in my home and avoid temptations.  Now, I feel social again.

You’re not going to believe this, but I continued to eat detox meals until Saturday night, a whole three-and-a-half days after the detox ended. I loved the food on this program.

However, while making the bed in the morning with just a day or two left in the detox, a burger flashed before my eyes, but not just any burger.  I wanted a specific burger at the Raleigh restaurant Chuck’s

This is a restaurant owned by well-known Chef Ashley Christensen, who was on Iron Chef America last year. She’s known for organic, farm-to-table-type food. Sure, her food may have some calories, but it’s good food that I felt would get me back into normal living, so to speak. I told Will that I wanted to go to Chuck’s for dinner on Saturday night.

Let me introduce you to The LAST WORD, a 5-ounce, house-ground, 100 percent chuck on a potato roll with sottocenere, and shredded Dino Kale in a hazelnut vinaigrette. AMAZING.

The Last Word Burger at Chuck's  Raleigh

I also had a few Belgium fries and a craft brew from Mother Earth Brewing Company in Kinston, North Carolina.

I felt good about what I ate, and I followed Lisa’s 80 percent-20 percent rule.  I indulged a little with the beer, but this week I’m going to do my best to eat whole, nonprocessed foods.

I woke up on Sunday morning still weighing 126 pounds. Typically, after a night eating out, I would be two to three pounds heavier the next morning. Not the case this time.  I would like to see this trend continue.

I am so glad to have had the opportunity for this detox/cleanse journey, as hard as it was on me.  I really think I learned a lot from the experience, and it helped me jumpstart some weight loss.

I have wanted to lose 5 pounds all year, but wasn’t successful. I would lose a couple of pounds then gain it all back.  My excess sugar, gluten, and lack of discipline plus a nonconsistent exercise routine hindered me from my goals.

Right now, I feel that my skin looks fresher, and I have more energy than I've had in quite awhile.

Ask me any questions you may have, and I will follow up with you in a few weeks to let you know if I am being successful or reverting back to my old eating ways.  I have created a new post-detox Pinterest board with some good recipes to help me on my journey.

I started with this Lentil Chili on Sunday night.

I think I’m on a roll.

Don't Upset Your Stuffed Animals, Kids - Make Your Beds!

It has been a BIG week in our house. I finished my detox.  Whoa! Those were some interesting 10-days. I plan to do another diary installment for you next week, but honestly, I haven't had a chance to sit down, and put my thoughts on paper.  Let's just say that you will be surprised about how post-detox/cleanse is shaping up in this house.

And in our other news, we now have a big girl bed for Baby Diva. So far, she is balking naps again, but is sleeping at night. Thank god!  This is about the time that things went downhill with my son, and we basically went sleepless and psychotic for more than a year. We waited six weeks for her bed, and of course, it came with a defective, and crooked headboard.

New "Big Girl" bed. She helped pick out her sheets, and quilt.

Are we the only people that things like this happen to?  It needs to be replaced, and it's on order AGAIN. We currently have her bed in the exact same spot we had her crib, and of course, my mother has already told me that is not the right spot for the room.

Let's worry about one thing at a time, and keep her comfortable, happy, and sleeping right now. Decorating is not really my talent, but neither is parenting.  I don't have time to read a lot of parenting books, and truthfully, I don't want read a lot of parenting books either.  I would rather watch Person of Interest, The Voice, and Modern Family in my spare time.

I told my girlfriend that I needed some CliffsNotes (remember them) on some parenting issues, and when opportunities came my way for some easy notes, I'm going to run with it.  Well, one fell in my lap. The first topic we're tackling is getting kids to make their beds.  As you can see,  I now have two beds to make.

I must stop blogging, and make these beds!

That's got to change soon.

I have a great guest post on the subject today, and I think he has some great ideas. Let me know your experiences.

Don't Upset Your Stuffed Animals, Kids - Make Your Beds!
By: Justin Greig

When I was a kid, I made my bed every morning. I might have even made it twice. There were about 30 stuffed animals that needed to safely be placed in their respective spots next to their best friends on top of my  bedspread. I truly believed that when I left, they would magically come to life. My little blue stuffed Smurf would be sad if he woke up and saw Smurfette laying on the other side of the bed. Odie might have a spaz attack if Garfield was across the room when he came to life that morning. My Cabbage Patch Kids might just sob all day if they weren't cuddled in a group in the corner of the well-made bed, guarded by my large teddy bear, Mr. Beasley. There was a formula; a ritual. And I loved it.

That playful little sanctuary still exists today, yet in a more realistic way. In fact, I've helped my kids become more willing to clean up their rooms each day and it all begins with making the bed.

Begin with a Bed Worth Making

Ask your child what type of room decor they would like to wake up to everyday. If it isn't decorated with Hello Kitty or Disney's "Cars" already and that's what they ask for, begin by finding bedding on a website like Macys.com. Leigh used PB Kids. Get creative with paint and accessories. For "Cars." locate stoplight lamps or a crosswalk sign. Once you get their rooms into the form they see fit, with encouragement and motivation, they are more likely to keep it tidy.

Be a Role Model

Get them on the right track and there's no turning back. There is something very important we, as parents, must understand. What we do, our children will do. They watch you because they look up to you. They mimic our habits. If you want your kids to make their beds in the morning, you must also make yours.

Give Them Motivation

If you have to help them get started, that is perfectly acceptable. Experiment on what tactics work on your child. Do you kill them with kindness? Maybe offer a treat, like breakfast (which you're going to give them anyway). Accomplishment always makes a kid feel confident and special. Offer incentives. Take a photo of the well-made bed and hang it on the fridge for the whole world to see, or at least daddy. Pride will fill your child and they'll want that feeling everyday. Be sure daddy recognizes the achievement and acknowledges them for it.

Get them started around age 3 or 4 to create habits that will last a lifetime.

Getting Creative

Make it a game. Sing the sheets up. Start making the bed as they are still laying inside of it. Toss the bedding across the room, lay in their bed and ask them to tuck you in nice and tight, then slip out of the covers and assist them in the finishing touches. Show them different ways to tuck the sheets — military style, cowboy style, Dora style or mermaid style. Tell them how proud Elmo would be of them.

I'm not sure whey I thought my stuffed animals would be upset with me if I didn't make my bed, but I might still believe this today. Regardless, making the bed can be fun! It can be ritualistic. And, starting early can shape your children into having a cleaner room and, quite possibly, a more organized life.

Sweet, Sweet Smiles: Let’s Keep It That Way after Halloween

How many of you already have candy corn in the house?

It’s OK. Don’t hide them. Halloween candy is one of the greatest things about fall.

Don’t you think?

That, plus pumpkins, and pumpkin pie, of course!

But my kids get way too much candy on Halloween night, and their fake orange and purple pumpkins, filled with chocolate, gooey, gummy goodies, stay on my kitchen counters for weeks.
Every night they want to dig in to their pumpkins for a candy dessert.  It could be leading them down a potential dangerous path for tooth decay.

Candies such as gummies, gooey caramel, raisins, and even potato chips are at the top of the list for causing tooth decay.  Kids eat a lot of candy, especially this time of year.  They don’t always brush well, and because of that, it doesn’t really surprise me that oral disease has become the No. 1 chronic childhood disease.

Sadly, 44 percent of American kids will suffer from pediatric oral disease by the time they reach kindergarten, and more than 2 million kids will have a cavity before they reach second grade.

Those stats scare me!

Being an old-timer, I have silver fillings in my mouth that I probably got sometime before I graduated from high school, and from after having braces.  I would love to see my kids have none.

Dr. Robert Elliot, D.M.D., M.S. of Cary Pediatric Dentistry saw my first child at the age of 12 months.

I took my kids to the dentist last week.  We love our dental practice in Cary with Dr. Robert Elliott, but my two haven’t always been perfect angels in the dental chair.  This year, I even brought my husband along as a reinforcement because on our last visit six months ago, my daughter was hysterical.

I didn’t want another scene from a horror show.

Fortunately, we got a good report there, but as expected we could do better brushing, flossing, and rinsing.

To be honest, the whole family could do better in this area.  My son has been using the Listerine Smart Rinse for a few months now.  We like the rinse, but he doesn’t floss.  I am not even going to say we do it sometimes. We don’t do it.

It’s not always easy to get our 2-year-old to brush at all, much less floss.

Dr. Elliott said that both of our children had some plaque buildup on the front, bottom teeth, and it’s something we need to keep an eye on and change our brushing habits.

As I'm editing these photos, I just noticed that my son attacked the lion behind the dental chair.
Now, you know why I needed an extra hand at the dental office this year.

These are signs we are failing in our dental routine.

Brushing alone misses 75 percent of your mouth!

The key to good dental care is to brush, floss, and also use a mouthwash such as Listerine Smart Rinse because it can really help prevent cavities. The rinse is designed for kids, provides 12-hour cavity protection, and strengthens teeth 99 percent better than brushing alone.

It acts like a magnet to grab particles left from brushing, and when your child spits out the mouth rinse, you can see the particles right there in the sink – proof that brushing alone is not enough.
I actually won the Smart Rinse from one of my favorite blogs several months ago. My son seemed excited to try the rinse, and he liked it.  It’s one of those things that if I had not been given the rinse to try, then I’m not sure I would have incorporated it into our routine for a child.

To put it plain and simple, I thought mouthwash just helped you have better breath. I guess I needed more education.  I’m not alone.

Organizations like the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation, better known as the American Tooth Fairy, are helping to educate parents about oral dental care.  This nonprofit organization is working hard to help children get dental care and fight against tooth decay.

We have to brush, floss, and rinse twice a day.

They are also challenging bloggers like me to put good dental care in action for my family.  All of us are going to brush, floss, and rinse for several weeks, and then I have to report on my blog how I did.

We also need to brush for at least two minutes.

Wow! Two minutes. That’s going to be challenging for my toddler, but she’s excited about her new brushes and rinse.

We’re equipped with our supplies to make this good dental health habit happen.

And before you make that candy run for Halloween, think dark chocolate this year.  Dark chocolate has tannins in it that help protect the teeth.

Yippee! I’m a big fan of dark chocolate.

But as soon as you consume that candy, you need to brush, floss, and rinse.
